This small extension to a basement flat near Crystal Palace in London has been designed to open up and connect the existing lounge and kitchen to the rear garden, creating an inside/outside space and extending the living areas into the outdoors. It is expressed as a simple extrusion of the existing geometry of the terraced house and steps down the site, introducing a new sitting area and ‘fold-away’ bedroom to the garden. An elegant light-grey handmade brick with hints of yellow in it will emulate the local material context whilst the slender cut of the brick will make it distinctively contemporary.
